Uganda’s Foreign Policy, Regional and International Missions

Foreign Policy is defined   as a set of strategies, decisions and actions taken by a state /government to safeguard its national interest and achieve its goals on the international arena.

The officially stated goals of the foreign policy of the Republic of  Uganda  as mentioned in the Foreign Policy Agenda is   to safeguard Uganda national interest and achieve its goals on the international arena  for the benefit of the  people of Uganda , the region  and the international community.

\r\n

The foreign policy vision of Uganda is predicated on "a conducive regional and international environment that promotes a secure and prosperous Uganda in which the peoples' interests are at the centre.
\r\n From the broad foreign policy guiding principles, and the doctrine of Uganda, the country's national interest has been anchored on three broad pillars namely:

  1. National Security (survival of the State, the people and endowments)
  2. \r\n
  3. National prosperity and
  4. \r\n
  5. Wellbeing of the people
  6. \r\n
\r\n

Uganda has deliberately taken a centric approach in pursuing its Foreign Policy:- (i)The Ring States (immediate neighbors, EAC, IGAD, ICGLR, Nile Basin) (ii)The region (Rest of Africa, AU, COMESA, Middle East and OIC) Uganda's doctrine of Regional led peace process using the Burundi and Somalia model where the region leads with the rest of the International community supporting the cause and (iii) The Rest of the world. These include UNGA, UNSC system, Development partners (e.g. bilateral /multilateral donors), international organizations and agencies and blocs (e.g. G77, G8, G20, BRICS, NATO)

\r\n The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and its Missions abroad have and continue to implement Uganda's Foreign Policy that helps to achieve the National interest mainly  through the following thematic areas:

  1. Promotion of Regional and International Peace and Security;
  2. \r\n
  3. Promotion of Commercial  and Economic Diplomacy;
  4. \r\n
  5. Promotion of National Image  abroad through  Public Diplomacy;
  6. \r\n
  7. Effective participation in Multilateral Diplomacy
  8. \r\n
  9. Promotion of Regional and Economic  Integration
  10. \r\n
  11. Implementation of Reporting Obligations on International Treaties and Conventions;
  12. \r\n
  13. Mobilization of Bilateral and Multilateral Resources for Development
  14. \r\n
  15. Provision of Protocol and Consular Services
  16. \r\n
  17. Provision of Diaspora Services
  18. \r\n
